Plaque is a white, sticky film of bacteria. It is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. With regular and proper brushing, plaque can be removed from the teeth. But since there are some areas in the mouth that are difficult to brush, unremoved plaque can develop into tartar, which can only be removed by your dentist.

In a dental scale and clean, your dentist removes the plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth using ultrasonic tools to knock off larger pieces of plaque. A handpiece sprays washes the debris away, leaving only the small deposits of plaque. Fine hand tools are used to remove and scrape all plaque.

After this, the surfaces are smoothed to make it difficult for plaque to stick. Those with gum disease are given extra care by cleaning deep below the gum lines or into the pockets.
