What Are Inlays And Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are examples of restorative devices that combine restorative and cosmetic benefits. They function like a dental filling. Inlays and onlays are recommended when the damage is too severe for a dental filling, but is not so severe that a dental crown would be needed.
Inlays are used when the damage is in the cusps of the tooth. It is the smaller treatment of the two. Onlays are placed on the top of the affected tooth, and rebuild its structure.
Inlays and onlays are best for chewing surfaces, compared to dental fillings. They are proven to last longer and are more conservative as they involve minimal enamel removal.

The Inlays And Onlays Procedure
Getting your inlays or onlays requires two dental visits. Ideal candidates have to go through a detailed process that begins with:
Inspection of the tooth
This happens in the first appointment. The tooth is inspected and damage is assessed. All the decayed parts are removed, the tooth is cleaned and disinfected.
An impression of the tooth is taken to determine your individual measurements. This is sent to the laboratory where your inlays or onlays are crafted. After the first appointment, a temporary filling is placed on the tooth.
On your second appointment, the temporary filling is removed and replaced with your inlays/onlays. After the material is placed, your dentist will conduct a final inspection to ensure accuracy of the procedure.
