Hygiene Preventative Dentistry
Caring for your teeth does not end when you leave the dentist’s chair. Good oral hygiene habits at home play an important role in you oral health journey. In fact, good oral hygiene habits are your first defense against dental problems.
At Your Gold Coast Dentist, our care for our patients does not end in the office; we make sure that each patient is amply educated about good oral hygiene. Below are quick and amazing reminders on how to keep your teeth clean and healthy wherever you are. Let’s take a look.
Brushing is one of the first things we learn when it comes to caring for our teeth. We’ve done it since we were children, and up until today. But the frequent practice of the activity does not make us “good brushers”.
A good brushing should be at least two minutes. It must include all areas in the mouth – the teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue. Sweep or brush away from the gumline; brush the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of the teeth, brush the tongue, cheeks, and gums.
The key to proper brushing is to be long, thorough, and gentle. Aggressive brushing does not mean more plaque removed. On the contrary, it harms the enamel and can even be a cause of corrosion.
Floss your teeth at least once a day, preferably before you sleep. This is to remove the food debris stuck between teeth. Brushing cannot remove this debris and it may lead to tooth decay if unattended.
Avoid sweet, starchy, and foods containing carbohydrates These foods are a favourite of tooth decay-causing bacteria. Eat mouth-friendly foods such as those rich in calcium.
To avoid stains, minimise intake of citrus and acidic foods, as well as berries, tea, coffee, and other similar food. You can eat “detergent foods” or those that are crisp such as apple and popcorn.
To prevent having a bad breath after your meal, refrain from spices and food with a strong odour.
Ask your dentist or search the web for effective dental tools you can use. Some examples are the electronic brush, tongue scraper, oral irrigators, and zip rings.
Dental Check Ups And Good Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene practices are your first defense against dental problems but they are not enough. You need a trusted dental partner to cover those areas you can’t handle.
A dental checkup includes a professional cleaning for optimum removal of plaque, particularly in the molars and other areas which are difficult to brush. Oral cancer screening and other diagnostic tests are also done during a dental check up.
We recommend two dental check ups a year, or once every six months.
