What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

Following the advice of the National Advisory Council on Dental Health, the Minister of Health has founded the Child Dental Benefits Schedule program. It aims to improve the oral health status of the country by introducing oral health care to children.

This is in pursuant to research studies demonstrating that dental conditions are the third leading cause of preventable hospitalisations in 2013-2014.

Under the CDBS, eligible children are given access to up to $1000 worth of basic dental treatments over two calendar years. Eligible children are given vouchers to be used when they visit the dentist.

Eligibility Requirements

Not all children qualify for this program. There are eligibility requirements that must be met.

Children must be:

  • Aged (2-17 years old)
  • Member of Medicare
  • In a family that receives financial assistance funded by the Australian government

The following are the family financial assistance funded by the Australian government:

  • Parenting payment
  • Family tax benefit
  • Youth allowance
  • Disability support pension
  • Carer payment
  • Special benefit
  • Veteran’s children education scheme (if child is 16 or older)
  • Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act education and training scheme (if child is 16 or older)

Medicare will send a letter of confirmation to the families of eligible children, stating the policies coverage and limitations.
